Closing Brief

2026-10-30 · Full-day summary, post-market earnings, next trading day highlights, updated 17:10 ET · This edition was delayed by a system issue and published on 10-31. Data cutoff: 2026-10-30 17:10 ET. We apologize for the delay.

SPY fell -1.77% and QQQ -3.47%, while equal-weight RSP lost only -0.79%, leaving RSP minus SPY at +0.99 percentage points. Against the cap-weighted index, the decline came mainly from the largest tech names; the equal-weight basket took far less damage. VIX closed at 19.42 after an intraday high of 23.93, so the stress eased before the close. If RSP catches down to SPY next session, the concentrated-selling read has to change.

Closing guide

As of 2026-10-30T17:10:00-04:00

The drop was concentrated in tech and momentum, not a broad risk-off

SPY fell -1.77% and QQQ -3.47%, while equal-weight RSP lost only -0.79%, leaving RSP minus SPY at +0.99 percentage points. Against the cap-weighted index, the decline came mainly from the largest tech names; the equal-weight basket took far less damage. VIX closed at 19.42 after an intraday high of 23.93, so the stress eased before the close. If RSP catches down to SPY next session, the concentrated-selling read has to change.

Semiconductors were weakest, and money looks to have moved within equities

SMH fell -6.98%, SOXX -8.24% and XLK -4.89%, while XLE gained +1.91%, XLP +1.41%, XLU +0.67% and XLV +0.45%; 6 of 12 tracked sectors rose. SMH is already down -15.4% over 21 days and XLK -9.3%, so today extended a trend rather than surprised. By style, MTUM lost -4.77% against -0.19% for USMV: momentum was hit and low volatility held. This is price dispersion and does not by itself prove fund flows.

Every megacap fell, while most earnings names rose

The Mega 8 simple average was -2.21%, with AVGO -5.48% and NVDA -4.22% weakest and TSLA -0.87% lightest. Most tracked earnings names closed higher: REGN +13.33%, AZN +7.02%, SNY +2.81%, XOM +2.16%. The data lack like-for-like results and consensus, so a price reaction is not an earnings beat. Strength in healthcare and energy reporters lines up with XLV and XLE relative strength; that is correlation, not cause.

The data offered no new direction

The Employment Cost Index rose 0.8 on the quarter, matching the 0.8 forecast; Chicago PMI was 55.3, below the 56.1 forecast; the total rig count was 603. Neither main surprise is large enough to explain the tech decline, so the selling more likely came from the stocks and sectors themselves. That is inference, not proof.

After-hours data are excluded from this edition

This edition was published late for the 10-30 close with a data cutoff of 17:10 ET; news and prices after the cutoff were not used, and after-hours earnings reactions are left blank. Headlines before the cutoff blamed Intel and Amazon results for the AI stock decline; we have no like-for-like figures for either company, so this stays a market narrative and not a confirmed cause.

Next session, watch whether tech stabilizes

Next session brings earnings from AAPL, PLTR and VRTX among others, and the ISM Manufacturing Index at 10:00. First watch whether SMH stabilizes and whether the RSP gap over SPY holds. If SMH falls again and XLE and XLP weaken with it, the rotation read fails and a broad decline in risk appetite becomes the better description. These are research observations, not trading instructions.
